Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) said Monday on MSNBC’s “Deadline” that Republicans’ opposition to aiding Ukraine for the war against Russia is based on former President Donald Trump’s wishes. He said this was because he was doing it “reflexively.”
“Republicans are soft on Russia. They see that Trump likes Russia, Russia likes Trump, so we have to support Trump,” Swalwell said. And that’s too bad because if you really step back and see that Ukraine’s freedom is ultimately America’s freedom, Russia and a brutal and ruthless dictator. As far as, that’s history. But the other part here is because they love to beat the chest and say they’re tough on China, well, I don’t know if you’re watching in Taiwan. “No, but why did I think for a second they would stand? Would I be okay if they attacked me?”
He continued, “I think they all support Trump. They’ve turned this Congress into the biggest law firm in Washington, D.C., working for one client: Donald Trump. So , all they reflexively know is to do what he wants. If Trump refuses to fund Ukraine, there’s no need to fund Ukraine. Most conservative members of their country. Even if they get a border deal, if it’s a big deal for President Trump, it’s not going to help him politically, and they’re going to kill the border deal.
Swalwell added: “Frankly, Democrats, we have to show voters who hate politics that this is a Republican effort to put politics over people. We want to flip that script and everything we do is about putting people before politics,” he added.
