GOP support for allowing felons to be president rises after Trump conviction: Poll

A new poll shows that support for allowing a felon to serve as president is growing among Republicans after former President Trump was convicted in New York last week.

investigationThe YouGov poll came less than a week after a jury found Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, guilty of all 34 felony counts in the hush-money case.

58% of Republicans New research reveals A convicted felon should be able to become president if elected, a view shared by just 17% of Republicans in April, YouGov found.

In a recent poll, 33% of independents said they thought a convicted felon should be able to become president, while only 12% of Democrats said the same.

The survey also found that fewer Republicans and independents said criminal behavior was one of the least desirable characteristics in a president than in a February poll.

In February, 34 percent of Republicans said criminal activity was one of the most undesirable traits; now, 19 percent say the same. Among independents, 52 percent said that in February, but now 38 percent say criminal activity is undesirable.

Democrats largely maintained their belief that criminal activity is an undesirable quality in a president.

A recent poll found that roughly half of Americans, 51 percent, believe Trump committed the crime for which he was convicted: falsifying business records to hide the payment of hush money before the 2016 election.

The conviction will not bar him from returning to the White House if he wins in November.

The survey was conducted among 1,110 adults between May 31 and June 2. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
