Mandy Freeman’s Journey with Gotham FC
Mandy Freeman has certainly had her share of experiences with Gotham FC over the past decade.
In her ten years with the team, she has accumulated over 10,000 minutes on the field, witnessed a transformation from Sky Blue, and celebrated two NWSL championships.
However, this Wednesday night marks a new milestone—seeing the club play in front of a bustling crowd at Citi Field.
“It’s been a challenging journey at times,” Freeman reflected. “But this moment truly motivates me to keep pushing forward.”
The Queen’s Classic, a matchup where Gotham takes on the Washington Spirit, is set to attract more than 40,000 fans. Head coach Juan Carlos Amoros described the occasion as “a fantastic opportunity.”
“This is definitely a significant day for women’s soccer and sports in general,” added Amoros.
Freeman, drafted in 2017, sees this as yet another testament to the franchise’s growth.
Once facing smaller crowds at Rutgers’ Yurkak Field, the team now has announced plans for a dedicated training facility.
Aussie star Sam Kerr is anticipated to make his second debut for the team on Wednesday. Freeman, among her teammates, is eager for this exciting opportunity.
“I was just chatting with Sam about it. He played at Yurchuk, and now he’s going to play at Citi Field,” Freeman mentioned. “It’s exciting to witness the growth from Sky Blue to Gotham, and I’m glad to be part of this evolution. It’s so well-deserved.”
This trip to Queens is not just a one-time event; Gotham plans to move permanently to New York City FC’s Etihad Park in 2028.
Amoros encouraged his players to be “venturous” and “imaginative” in appealing to new fans.
“We’re aiming to showcase a style of football that captivates the spectators, which is what we intend to do tomorrow,” he stated. “We want everyone attending the match at Citi Field to fall in love with the team and look forward to the next game.”
As spectators tune in to the primetime action or catch the game on ESPN, they’ll have plenty of reasons to return, with stars like Kerr, Trinity Rodman of Washington, and New York’s Rose LaBelle drawing attention.
Currently ranked fourth in the league, Gotham is keen to secure a victory against their second-place rivals—”we need to handle that pressure,” Freeman noted. She’s also eyeing the future.
“We aim to set records every time we play in New York since that reflects the number of fans that can attend our matches,” she said.
In further club news, they’ve announced the signing of Irish midfielder Denis O’Sullivan from Liverpool.
O’Sullivan, a two-time champion with North Carolina Courage, is joining on an initial one-year loan with a buyout option.
“I believe Denis is among the best midfielders around,” Amoros remarked. “Her insight into the game will greatly benefit both our team and our fans.”
