Gotham FC Faces Tough Loss Ahead of Champions Cup
This week, Gotham FC’s pursuit of a playoff spot in the NWSL takes a pause as they gear up for the CONCACAF W Champions Cup. They’ll need to bounce back quickly, following a tough 2-1 defeat to the Houston Dash in Harrison, New Jersey. This match, marked by a lengthy weather delay, saw Gotham score two goals early in the second half but ultimately fall short.
Coach Juan Carlos Amoros expressed his disappointment, noting, “It’s obviously a tough one to take. The team did everything necessary to win, except for actually scoring enough.” He mentioned the missed opportunities, saying, “We had so many chances but managed to convert just two goals on one shot.”
Top scorer Esther Gonzalez contributed to Gotham’s efforts but couldn’t help the team overcome their fifth loss, leaving them with a record of 5-5-6. This setback prevented them from climbing past Racing Louisville FC, which sits in seventh place—just outside the playoff spots.
Interestingly, this match kicks off a busy stretch for Gotham, who will play at home three times over the next week. Their upcoming game is against CF Monterrey Femenil at Icahn Stadium, as part of the Champions Cup group stage.
Gotham had previously tasted tournament success in 2024, clinching their first title with a narrow 1-0 win over Tigress Wuan, thanks to Gonzalez’s goal.
Reflecting on the recent defeat, midfielder Sarah Spansky shared, “No one enjoys being on the losing side in games like this. There were promising moments, but, yeah, it’s unfortunate how it ended.” She acknowledged the quick turnaround, emphasizing the need to shift focus to the next match.
This loss brought to mind their last encounter back in March, which ended in a scoreless draw. In that game, Gotham’s defender Tiana Davidson suffered an ACL injury, sidelining her for the season.
In a play during the recent match, USWNT standout Rose Lavelle fired a shot that hit the post. It rebounded directly to Gonzalez, who slotted it into the corner, giving Gotham an early lead.
Although they held the advantage at halftime, Houston managed to equalize early in the second half when a back pass from veteran Emily Sonnet went awry.
Things got dramatic when a 2-hour and 18-minute weather delay set in. Neither team could score until the final moments, when Houston’s Michelle Azorry found the net in the 93rd minute. There’s some debate, however, about whether Azorry may have been offside.
In the aftermath, referee Buck Jess Carter lamented the tough loss, saying, “We felt like we dominated the game, and to lose in the last minute was a real blow. We need to move on quickly, though; there’s another game in just three days.”
