California already ranks number one among states in the nation for gun control, according to Mike Bloomberg's Everytown for Gun Safety, but Governor Gavin Newsom (D) signed 24 new gun control bills into law on Tuesday.
Prior to Tuesday, California had in place a ban on “assault weapons,” a ban on “large-capacity” magazines, universal background checks, a 10-day waiting period for gun purchases, mandatory gun registration, limits on the number of guns law-abiding citizens can purchase each month, a ban on carrying on campuses for self-defense, a ban on K-12 teachers being armed for classroom defense, and background checks for ammunition purchases.

Despite current gun laws, Breitbart News pointed to FBI data showing California led the nation in “active shooter incidents” in 2021 and 2023.
Additionally, on June 10, 2023, Breitbart News pointed out that according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 17% of annual firearm homicides in the United States occur in California, a state with gun control laws.
