Gov. Greg Gianforte Discusses What the GOP Needs to Do for States to Choose Republican Governors

Gianforte Highlights Challenges and Opportunities for Republican Governors

Governor Greg Gianforte, who heads the Republican Governors Association, recently shared insights on how the Republican Party can work toward maintaining and increasing the number of Republican governors across the nation during an appearance on a radio show.

He noted there are currently 26 Republican governors, suggesting that there’s potential for the party to gain ground in critical states that could lean Republican. “We should take Kansas. That should be a red state. Arizona should be a red state. There’s a lot of work to do,” he remarked.

When discussing strategies for keeping his own state, Montana, reliably Republican or turning others red, Gianforte drew from his own experiences with state management. He recalled his successful efforts in navigating through challenges in Montana by leaning into conservative principles.

“I was the first Republican governor in 16 years, and it was like, ‘Clean aisles three, four, and five.’ We got to work,” he explained, describing the election as a “dogfight.” He also mentioned that he won re-election in 2024 by a significant margin of 21 points, attributing his success to substantial measures he took, like tax cuts and deregulation, which positioned Montana favorably.

“We have streamlined 35 percent of all regulations. We’ve paid off all state debt. Montana is debt-free now… Our unemployment rate is at a record low, and wages are on the rise. In fact, we’re one of only two states during the Biden era where wage growth has surpassed inflation,” he stated. He emphasized that the contrast between Republican and Democratic states is notable.

Gianforte further asserted that Republican-led states enjoy lower unemployment, safer communities, and higher wages while suggesting that Democratic-led states often struggle to support families effectively, pointing to issues such as fraud and waste.

He also mentioned business trends, highlighting that people are increasingly choosing to relocate. “Just last week, we announced a major aerospace manufacturer in Washington, and now they’re investing in Montana, creating over 1,000 jobs. We’ve been noticing a lot of opportunity in Washington,” he said, referencing notable executives like the CEO of Starbucks moving to states like Florida and the CEO of Zillow relocating to Nevada, suggesting they prefer the benefits of their hard work in more favorable circumstances.
