On Tuesday, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, D., called for more guns in her state, claiming “guns are the number one killer of young Americans.”
Whitmer made a comment in Lansing, with gun control lobby members gathering behind her for the annual advocacy day.
For years, the left was called to argue that guns were the biggest cause of American children’s deaths. Breitbart News showed that the claim was false when President Joe Biden first made it on June 2, 2022. The claim is based on reported 2020 CDC data, where we found that 18 and 19 years old (i.e. people of voting age) must be counted as children in order for Biden to be accurate.
However, since children ages 18 and 19 are not children, Biden’s claims were false.
The claim was clearly wrong, but it was repeated by Kamala Harris and House Minority leader Hicombe Jeffries (D-NY) and actresses Alisa Milano and Jennifer Lawrence.
When Whitmer dealt with the topic on Tuesday, she shifted her focus to “young people” rather than children. She did not mention that the number of “young people” in question is either gang members or street criminals.
