Controversy Erupts Over Legal Fees in Minnesota

Republican lawmakers in Minnesota are voicing strong criticism after it was revealed that Governor Tim Walz has allocated $430,000 in taxpayer funds for legal expenses related to the state’s “sanctuary city” policy.

Invoices obtained by the Star Tribune indicate that Walz’s office engaged the prominent law firm K&L Gates to get ready for a hearing before the GOP-controlled House oversight committee. This committee is set to question him, along with other Democratic governors, about their sanctuary city policies.

In May alone, legal costs amounted to roughly $232,000, which translates to about $516 per hour for services rendered, according to the same report.

In total, the engagement with K&L Gates for the period from April 10 to June 12 brought the overall expense to $430,000 for legal preparations.

Minnesota GOP Representative Jim Nash, one of the state’s Legislative Advisory Board’s two Republican members, raised concerns over why Walz opted to hire an external attorney instead of utilizing state legal resources.

Nash remarked, “Spending half a million taxpayer dollars for a governor to revisit a familiar place seems excessive, especially considering the Attorney General was present during the same time.” He stated that they are pursuing a more in-depth review of the invoices disclosed by the Star Tribune.

Some critics have likened the financial outlay to public relations consulting rather than necessary legal advice. Nash questioned whether such extensive funds were truly needed for someone with Walz’s background, saying, “After spending 12 years in Congress, he should know how to conduct himself in those settings. So, why the need for this $430,000 expense?”

In response to the backlash, both Walz and his team defended their choice to hire K&L Gates, suggesting that the GOP’s planned hearing was largely a staged event lacking significant purpose, as reported by the Star Tribune.

Walz’s spokesperson, Teddy Tschann, described the hearing as a “political stunt at taxpayers’ expense,” arguing that the Republicans were more focused on creating a spectacle than engaging in meaningful discourse about immigration policies in Minnesota. He expressed frustration over the GOP’s lack of genuine interest in listening to Walz’s viewpoint.

When asked about the hearing, Walz expressed reluctance to invest his time or money in what he described as an “epic” waste. Though this recent incident has drawn considerable negative attention, it’s not the first time Walz has faced scrutiny over legal expenditures. Earlier this year, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu indicated she could incur around $650,000 to prepare for a similar hearing, while Denver has already spent over $250,000 on outside legal counsel for their mayor.

Fox News Digital reached out to both Walz’s office and K&L Gates for comments but did not receive responses.
