Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) expressed concerns that the lengthy government shutdown is reaching an unprecedented duration and could pose a “national security” risk to the United States.
In a recent interview with Breitbart News’ Matthew Boyle, Mullin highlighted that the shutdown, now in its 37th day, is significantly impacting not just finances but also slowing down military initiatives in the country.
“This could create substantial financial burdens on us. Under President Trump, we saw a GDP growth of 4% in recent months. However, because of the shutdown, we’re now only growing at 1%. This really matters,” Mullin noted.
“Once the government reopens, the funds won’t just rush back into the economy. Those dollars are gone. It’s not like we’ll suddenly see an 8% GDP next month. Recovering from a shutdown of this length will likely take at least two months. So it has become a national security issue,” he added, pointing to the economic risks involved.
“What’s concerning is that critical military projects and essential programs are now at risk of delays. Air traffic control is also crucial for transporting goods efficiently,” he explained.
Mullin remarked, “Now we have a national security issue that’s in the hands of the Democrats,” suggesting that he expects them to compromise “this weekend.”
He also discussed the implications for air traffic controllers and TSA personnel who are currently working without pay, stressing that “very few” can sustain themselves financially without paychecks for even 30 or 45 days.
“Most of these workers are living paycheck to paycheck. I mean, if you think about it, very few have 30 days of savings, let alone 45. We’re asking them to ensure the safety of the American public while not compensating them? It’s frankly embarrassing,” Mullin said.
