Virginia Governor Signs New Regulations on Transgender Participation
Virginia’s Governor Glen Youngkin has announced new regulations limiting transgender individuals from participating in women’s sports and accessing certain intimate spaces. This decision came with the issuance of an Executive Order from the state health board.
In a statement, Youngkin expressed significant concerns regarding the safety of women and girls, stating, “The health and safety of women and girls participating in gender spaces and athletics are seriously at risk due to irresponsible policies.” He mentioned issues like registered sex offenders being allowed in spaces like public locker rooms, which, he believes, poses a danger.
He added that it’s disheartening that some individuals overlook these regulations and the associated risks to health, privacy, dignity, and respect for Virginians. “This must stop,” he insisted, thanking the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Education for their supportive stance on protecting women and girls.
Within his Executive Directive 14, Youngkin outlined instances where Virginia school districts allegedly disregarded the Trump administration’s interpretation of Title IX, favoring “gender identities” over biological realities, particularly regarding biological men identifying as transgender.
He cited a troubling incident from this year where a sex offender, who claimed to be transgender, exposed himself to a woman and a girl in the girls’ locker room at Arlington Public Schools.
The directive emphasized that these actions represent clear violations of health, safety, privacy, dignity, and respect. The Health Commission accepted petitions from three female athletes in the state, formally requesting the Virginia Health Board to revise regulations under 12 VAC 5. The aim is to prevent biological men from joining women-only athletic teams and from accessing female-designated spaces.
The board is set to consider announcing these proposed regulations, marking a significant step in the state’s legal process.
