California Governor Signs New Gun Control Bills

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed ten new gun control measures into law, including one aimed at preventing the use of 3D printers to manufacture firearms.

Everytown for Gun Safety, which is connected to Mike Bloomberg, expressed enthusiasm over Newsom’s approval of The Firearm Printing Prevention Act (AB 2047), calling it “groundbreaking legislation.”

This particular bill is intended to “stop the next generation of ghost guns” by mandating that consumer 3D printers sold within California have technology that can detect and block attempts to create firearms or illegal firearm components.

Additionally, another regulation, Senate Bill 948, significantly broadens the state’s Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) requirements. Starting in 2029, it will enforce a minimum four-hour training course that includes live-fire exercises and classroom instruction set by the state, as noted by the NRA-ILA.

AB 1743 is another new measure that expands the state’s data-sharing network for firearm owners, increasing access to information contained in California’s Automated Firearms System along with related databases.

Senate Bill 1220 introduces a new misdemeanor that will lead to a ten-year prohibition on firearm possession for certain offenses.

Newsom’s office released a statement regarding these new laws, claiming that California is the “[No. 1] state in the nation for gun law strength and effectiveness.” However, they did not reference FBI statistics reported by other sources, which indicate that despite its stringent gun control, California also led the country in “active shooter incidents” in both 2021 and 2023.
