New Jersey Governor Calls for Funding Restoration for Gateway Tunnel Project
Recently inaugurated New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has urged President Donald Trump to promptly reinstate funding for the $16 billion Gateway Tunnel project, which is a significant rail infrastructure initiative beneath the Hudson River linking New Jersey and New York City.
Governor Sherrill, a Democrat, characterized the president’s refusal to finance the Gateway Tunnel as an “unlawful attack on New Jersey,” expressing that it reflects a “reckless disregard” for the state’s economy and the well-being of working families.
In a statement, she remarked, “If the President does not restore funding for this project that I helped secure while in Congress, he will single-handedly destroy nearly 100,000 jobs and $20 billion in economic activity.” That’s a pretty serious claim, right?
“New Jersey will fight tooth and nail for our hard-earned tax dollars and this essential project that will ease commuting and enhance the quality of life for Garden State residents,” she continued.
Sherrill emphasized that New Jersey and New York represent some of the strongest economic areas globally, labeling the Gateway project as the most urgent and vital infrastructure endeavor in the country.
Following a government shutdown last fall, the Trump administration announced a halt on billions in federal funding for the tunnel and the Second Avenue subway extension. This cut followed Trump’s accusation that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York was responsible for the shutdown, given his long-standing involvement with the project.
The Gateway Tunnel Project has been ongoing for over a year after securing a commitment of roughly $12 billion from the federal government.
Reports indicate that the Department of Transportation has suspended funding pending a review of the contract to ensure compliance with new regulations concerning women and minority-owned businesses. There’s a lot at stake here.
Approximately 1,000 workers remain at the project’s four sites in New York City and New Jersey, which are temporarily propped up by a loan facility set to expire soon, adding more urgency to the situation.
Meanwhile, the White House Press Secretary refuted Sherrill’s comments, blaming Democrats for the funding impasse. “Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Party are the ones who refuse to negotiate with the Trump administration and are obstructing the Gateway Tunnel agreement,” Khush Desai told media. It seems like a back-and-forth there, doesn’t it?
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) also joined the chorus, decrying the continued withholding of federal funds as “unacceptable” and calling for an immediate release of the funds. She pointed out that such actions jeopardize union members and families across New York and New Jersey.
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York condemned the funding freeze, framing it as “collateral damage” from Trump’s efforts to undermine New Yorkers. “The Gateway Tunnel is vital for the economy of this state and the entire region, and I will fight tooth and nail to ensure it gets built,” Hochul asserted.
So, there’s this pronounced struggle between state leaders and the federal administration over an issue that is not just a matter of funding, but it’s about livelihoods, infrastructure, and regional strength. It’s definitely worth keeping an eye on how this will all unfold.
