The new NBA season is just around the corner, but the final fireworks were still being set off before the offseason ended. of new york knicks Karl Anthony Towns minnesota timberwolves in exchange for protection of Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a first-round draft pick. detroit pistons, According to The Athletic. Charlotte Hornets are be involved in transactions As the third team.
It's a great deal from every perspective. The Timberwolves are coming off their best season in history, reaching the Western Conference Finals, and now they are trading one of their pillars. The Knicks already piled on with the all-in trade for Mikal Bridges this offseason, and now they've filled the hole at center in the most dramatic way possible.
This trade will reshape the race for a spot in the NBA Finals between both conferences. We included both the Knicks and Timberwolves on our preseason list of eight teams that could win the 2025 championship. Two of the NBA's best teams suddenly looked dramatically different entering the season.
After such a deal is finalized, results must be announced immediately by both parties.
Karl-Anthony Towns trade Knicks grade
The Knicks have been aggressive in trying to increase their championship equity since making a bold trade just before New Year's Eve to acquire OG Anunoby for RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley. The Knicks won 50 games last season to earn the No. 2 seed in the East, but injuries and fatigue caused the team to collapse as the team advanced to the second round against the Indiana Pacers.
The Knicks started the offseason with a five-round first-round trade for Mikal Bridges. They somehow brought in Karl-Anthony Towns, one of the NBA's best offensive big men, to close out the game.
The Knicks' mission is clear. They want to beat the Knicks. boston celtics And win an NBA championship. This trade will be successful because it increases the chances of success for them.
It feels like the not-so-subtle Knicks are building this team specifically to play against the champion Celtics. They currently have two elite wing defenders in Anunoby and Bridges, top MVP candidate Jalen Brunson as the driving force behind their offense, and with the addition of Towns they have a five-out setup to rival Boston. There is.
Towns is one of the best shooting big men of all time, making just 41.6 percent of his threes on five or more attempts per game. He could immediately improve the Knicks' spacing while also playing some minutes at center. Mitchell Robinson recovers from injury (He is expected to be out until December or January). The Knicks finished 11th in 3-point percentage and 13th in 3-point percentage last season, but both numbers should improve with Towns in the lineup. Most importantly, after acquiring Kristaps Porzingis, New York can now get the same five outs that helped Boston win the title.
Can the Knicks maintain their defense with five KATs? That remains to be seen. Towns isn't an intimidating backline rim protector, but the Knicks will bet they have enough good defenders in front of him (Bridges, Anunoby, Josh Hart) to make his job easier. . The Knicks ranked 10th in defensive rating last year, but lost their best defender when Isaiah Hartenstein signed with the Thunder in free agency. If the Knicks keep KAT5, I expect that number to drop slightly. Robinson will likely return eventually, and then the Knicks can go and see what happens with KAT and the four.
Losing DiVincenzo would reduce the depth of the backcourt. Behind Brunson, the Knicks don't have many other guards right now. They are betting big on Deuce McBride. Bridges can play as a two-guard, while Hart has the size of a two-guard but plays more like a forward. Cam Payne, Landry Shamet and rookie Tyler Kolek could all be forced into playing time at some point.
It will be interesting to see how head coach Tom Thibodeau manages this group. Thibodeau has historically started with the heaviest minutes in the league. At the same time, the only thing that really matters to the Knicks is the playoffs. Considering the Knicks' physical collapse in the second round last year, Thibs' rotation could be one of the biggest subplots of the season.
At the end of the day, this trade makes the Knicks better. Towns is an incredible offensive talent who can play without Mitchell Robinson. New York has a lot of money on the table with Towns long-term, but that's a question for another day. The Knicks are looking to win their first title since 1973, and I think they got even closer today. But they still aren't as good as the Celtics.

Timberwolves trade-grade acquisition of Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo
The Timberwolves' primary motivation for making this trade was to save money. Let me make that clear up front.
The Minnesota Timberwolves would save $26.5 million in salary and luxury tax penalties if they do not receive additional salary in this trade.
He is expected to surpass Second Apron's $188.9 million this season as well. For 15 players, they're making $14.5 million more than that.

The Timberwolves cost too much money to stick together long term. The question was whether it was too expensive to keep together for another year, and the owners decided yes.
Minnesota had a lot of momentum entering this season. They defeated last year's champion Denver Nuggets in the second round to advance to the conference finals, tying the record for longest playoff appearance in franchise history. The Wolves have a rising young star in Anthony Edwards. They had the league's No. 1 defense led by Rudy Gobert. KAT was a dynamite offensive player who could raise his ceiling whenever he got hot, but ultimately Minnesota decided he was expendable.
The Wolves' biggest problem last season was their half-court offense. Despite adding a good wing shooter in DiVincenzo, this trade worsens their spacing.
DiVincenzo would be a great addition to the backcourt between Mike Conley and Edwards. He was an elite 3-point shooter last season, making 40.1 percent of his 8.7 attempts per game. He is one of the fastest triggers in the league and also has enough size to be a capable perimeter defensive player.
Randle feels like a very odd fit next to Rudy Gobert. Randle will make three-pointers — he's made five to eight per game over the last four years in New York — but the 29-year-old has actually been good at it in his career. He only had one season where he made shots. Randle made 31.1 percent of his threes last year and 34.3 percent the year before. He is also recovering from a shoulder injury that put him out of action on January 27 of last year. It's unclear if he'll be ready for the start of the season, but he should be back to full health soon.
If the Timberwolves plan to play Gobert, Randle, and Jaden McDaniels together, those lineups will face a significant shooting deficit. Minnesota also still has Naz Reid, who shot 41 percent from three last year. Reed has improved over the years and now, at 25 years old, he must take another leap forward to play the biggest role of his career.
Could the Timberwolves trade Randle during the season to get a more fit player? Indeed, that may be the case. However, it won't be easy to find one given the fact that the organization clearly wants a pay cut. This trade made Minnesota more sustainable at a time when it would have been trying to maximize its chances of winning a title. In fact, they were a long shot candidate with Towns, but now it feels like they have a little more of a chance.
At the same time, concerns about KAT's durability and fit issues with Gobert are valid. He has four years and $220 million left on his contract. No one would argue that KAT is the most reliable star. If Randle has a great shooting season or Reid levels up while KAT can't live up to Thibodeau's demands, it's not impossible that this move could be prescient in hindsight. I don't like it as a Minnesota state, but I don't think it's something to be ashamed of.
