Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina argued that President Biden’s decision not to suspend his campaign is “very good news” for Republicans heading into the November election.
“From a political standpoint, President Biden’s promise to continue the campaign no matter what is very good news not only for President Trump but for the entire lower-division Republican team.” Posted by Graham On social media platform X.
Graham was responding to a post by President Biden in which he made it clear he had no plans to drop out of the race.
“I’m the sitting president of the United States. I’m the Democratic candidate. I’m staying in the race.” Posted by Biden on friday.
His performance in last week’s presidential debate has sparked widespread panic among Democrats not only about Biden’s ability to beat former President Trump in the polls this fall, but also about his ability to serve another term as president.
Since then, there have been growing calls for Biden to halt his campaign and find another candidate to challenge Trump. Biden and his team have stressed that he has no plans to withdraw from the race.
At his first major rally since the calls began, Biden forcefully declared that he would continue his campaign.
“I intend to run again and win,” he said.
Much of the national discussion after the debate was about Biden’s performance, not his opponent’s, with Graham arguing that Biden had “a bad term as president,” not just a bad night.
The South Carolina senator avoided questions about the numerous false claims Trump made during the debate, as he questioned how the country got to a point where Biden was seen as the favorite to be the Democratic nominee.
“He’s not a good president. He’s a decent person. He’s a failed president. He’s compromised. That’s the story of this,” Graham said last Sunday.
Biden is scheduled to give his first post-debate interview with ABC at 8 p.m. on Friday night, in what is widely seen as a make-or-break moment for his campaign.
