Sen. Lindsey Graham Responds to Fatal Shooting of Charlie Kirk
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) described the recent fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk as “an assault on political movements.” In an interview on NBC News’ Meet the Press, he expressed his concerns, saying, “I think this is an attack on the political movement.” Graham emphasized Kirk’s significant role, noting he’s among the top three figures in Donald Trump’s political efforts during the 2024 campaign.
The conservative activist, who founded Turning Point USA, was shot at an event on the Utah Valley University campus. The FBI apprehended the suspected gunman, identified as Tyler Robinson, late Thursday night.
Kirk was a close ally of President Trump and played a vital part in the ground game for Trump’s campaign. During a speech on Thursday, Trump attributed the shooting to the “radical left,” suggesting they obstruct unity in the country. He also referenced previous instances of political violence against himself, highlighting the risks involved in public life.
Interestingly, while Trump has discussed threats against his supporters, he has been less vocal about attacks targeting Democrats, such as the arson incident involving Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and other past events related to figures like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
According to voter registration records in Utah, Robinson was not affiliated with any political party. Utah Governor Spencer Cox mentioned that the suspect seemed to become “more political” leading up to the tragedy.
Condemnation of Kirk’s murder came from lawmakers across the political spectrum. Graham specifically urged that political disagreements be settled through dialogue rather than violence. He pointed out that many Republicans are particularly affected by this incident.
“Charlie represents a symbol of the MAGA movement for countless individuals, especially younger supporters who often feel overlooked,” Graham remarked. “He articulated views that not everyone appreciated, but violence is never the solution.”
