Grammy Ratings Decline Because of Decreased Young Audience

Grammy Awards See Significant Ratings Decline Again

The Grammy Awards experienced a steep drop in viewership for the second consecutive year, primarily attributed to a decrease in younger audiences. Only 14.4 million people watched this year’s event, which used to draw between 25 and 40 million viewers back in 2016 through 2019.

This year’s numbers mark the fourth lowest in Grammy history, barely surpassing last year’s 12.55 million and preceding years with even lower counts. The awards show, often criticized for its political nature, saw a slight increase in 2024 with 16.9 million viewers, but viewership dipped again in 2025 to 15.4 million. This year continued that trend, dropping by another million viewers.

That’s an 11 percent decrease from last year and a staggering 20 percent drop compared to two years ago. Interestingly, most of the loss has come from the very demographic the music industry and advertisers aim to engage—young people.

This year’s awards showed a 13 percent decline in viewers aged 25 to 54, 19 percent among those 18 to 49, and a significant 20 percent drop in the 18 to 34 age group. After what many considered a disappointing event, with performances veering into political commentary, it seems unlikely ratings will recover soon.

Despite previous high viewership numbers prior to the pandemic, and a rebound in 2024, the entertainment media often blame streaming and COVID for the current situation. Yet, the real issue with the Grammys, similar to other Hollywood productions lately, seems to be a lack of fun and inspiration.

I used to look forward to watching the Grammys. They were about music and entertainment. Now, it feels like a platform for political statements where enjoyable moments are overshadowed by heavy-handed messages.

What I found amusing this year was seeing winners absorbed in their phones on the way to the event, likely trying to figure out what was trending to discuss. Just a few months back, they were focused on heavy political topics.

It’s a curious landscape where it appears conformity is valued over genuine expression. The focus seems to shift away from entertaining the audience toward lecturing and criticizing them, which, quite frankly, not many want to see anymore.
