A great white shark, weighing around 700 pounds and named Bella, is making her way to Virginia Beach for the holidays.
Tagged in Nova Scotia back in July, she’s been migrating south, recently spotted along Virginia’s East Coast. Her journey has taken her quickly from Montauk to the Chesapeake Bay area.
Researchers indicate that this behavior illustrates how great white sharks utilize coastal areas during the late fall and winter months. Fortunately, her presence near the shore is considered typical and presents minimal risk to beachgoers.
In the long run, tracking such sharks could help scientists determine mating locations as they mature, offering useful insights into their lifecycle.
Chris Fisher, founder of OCEARCH and a marine biologist tracking this particular 10-foot female, mentioned that Bella was located 32 miles west of the Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge and 52 miles northeast of Virginia Beach.
Scientists are also monitoring Contender, the largest male great white recorded in the Atlantic. They note this is the first instance of documenting Bella’s annual migration south.
This marks a significant step forward in understanding the behavior of great white sharks along the Atlantic coastline.
According to Fisher, while most sharks have migrated south of Cape Hatteras, Bella’s movement is quite slow compared to others making the transition.
“This is the first time we can accurately track her journey and see how she’s moving,” he shared.
Tracking data sheds light on how these predators navigate the Atlantic during autumn and early winter. Fisher noted that about 88 percent of tagged sharks spend their summers and falls in Atlantic Canada, with only a mere 12 percent venturing into the northeastern United States.
“They create pressure on seals, preventing them from overindulging in our fish,” he added, stating their role in protecting fish stocks.
Researchers were particularly intrigued by Bella’s swift movement last week, covering the distance from Montauk to the Chesapeake Bay region, showcasing the impressive speed of these apex predators.
Fisher commented, “She’s really fast. It’s curious to see if she’ll pause here. Sometimes we observe sharks stopping in these northern outer shore areas for a bit before heading further south.”
As she transitions from northern waters to more productive areas, where the continental shelf is near the coast, the likelihood of abundant food sources increases.
Despite their close proximity to popular beaches, it’s crucial to understand that the presence of sharks like Bella is quite normal and poses minimal danger to swimmers.
Fisher explained that modern tracking technology, developed after 2012, has simply exposed what’s been happening all along.
“This isn’t unusual at all,” he stressed. “We’ve been swimming with great whites our entire lives. It’s just that now, we’re aware of it.”
He reassured that interactions with sharks remain statistically rare, with fewer than a dozen incidents reported globally each year.
“The fear generated from the movie *Jaws* is outdated,” he noted, stating that the actual risk is much lower than the dangers of driving on the freeway.
Researchers propose that the increased sightings of sharks result more from the ocean’s recovery than from a population boom in hazardous areas.
This resurgence is seen as a “great return to abundance,” highlighting effective management practices aiming to restore marine ecosystems.
Fisher remarked, “We’re witnessing more marine life now than we have in the past fifty to sixty years. In the United States, we’re not part of the grim narrative concerning global oceans; instead, we’re leading the charge in ocean reclamation.”
He advises beachgoers to remain aware, without succumbing to fear. Suggesting that they look for signs of marine life activity—like feeding birds or bait balls—and choose quieter swimming spots.
Monitoring Bella could provide long-term data on great white sharks, potentially identifying mating sites for the first time. Fisher noted, “Bella is just one of many great sharks we’ll be observing as she transitions from a juvenile to a mature adult over the coming years.”
