Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Advocates for Commutation of George Santos’ Sentence
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is calling on the Trump administration to commute the sentence of George Santos, who was handed a seven-year prison term earlier this year for fraud and aggravated identity theft.
On Monday, Greene shared a letter in a social media post where she mentioned that she had sent Santos’ sentencing details to an amnesty lawyer who is pushing President Trump for clemency.
“The seven-year sentence for campaign-related offenses seems disproportionately harsh when other members of Congress, who have committed far worse acts, remain unpunished,” Greene stated. “Santos has been held accountable, and he has expressed remorse. It’s time to correct this unfairness. We must insist on equal justice under the law!”
Santos, 37, reported to the Federal Correctional Facility in Fairton, New Jersey, at the end of July, marking a dramatic chapter in New York Republican politics.
After his election to the House in 2022, inconsistencies in Santos’ life story came to light, leading to 23 felony charges for a range of offenses, including false statements and identity theft.
He acknowledged his controversial time in Congress with a social media post just a day before starting his prison term.
In her letter, Greene argued that commuting his sentence would highlight the seriousness of his actions while also opening doors for him to make amends and better serve his community.
Her appeal follows Trump’s recent comments during a Newsmax interview, where he did not rule out a pardon for Santos but also described him as having “lied like hell.” Trump remarked that he was unfamiliar with Santos personally but acknowledged his support for Trump during his congressional tenure.
The president noted that no one has approached him regarding a pardon for Santos, who has expressed a desire for understanding from Trump.
