Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said Senate Republicans supporting the bipartisan immigration and funding bill currently under negotiation “are going to be traitors to our country.” said.
As the Senate prepares to move forward with the bill, House conservatives are increasingly vocal against the deal, which includes border and asylum reform as well as funding for Ukraine and Israel.
President Biden has expressed openness to bipartisan measures, but former President Trump has expressed opposition.
In an interview with The Hill’s Kevin Cirilli, Greene denied that her opposition to the border deal had anything to do with presidential politics and said the bill is not bipartisan.
“You call that a bipartisan agreement? There are only a few Republican senators there. They, along with the Democrats, are going to be traitors to our country and allow 5,000 people to trespass into our country.” is. [each day] before they even think about closing it down,” she said. “It’s not bipartisan.”
Greene echoed the opinion of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) that the bill would be “dead on arrival” once it reaches the House.
“Anyone who is going to vote yes should be ashamed and resign because they are not serving the American people,” Greene said. “They don’t follow our constitution or our laws.”
She added that she did not think the Speaker would “break that promise.”
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is moving ahead despite Johnson’s warnings, and if the bill passes the Senate with strong Republican support, Johnson will be able to move forward in the House. We hope that there will be sufficient pressure to bring the matter to a vote.
