Greg Bovino Steps Down Amidst Controversy

Greg Bovino, who led the U.S. Border Patrol during a contentious period of mass deportation under the Trump administration, is resigning, although he plans to take on a new leadership role. This comes during a time of heated backlash regarding immigration enforcement across the nation.

In January, Bovino was removed from his position as commander of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) following incidents in which two Americans, Renee Good and Alex Preti, lost their lives during an immigration raid in Minneapolis.

He announced his retirement during an interview with a media outlet, reflecting on his experiences: “The greatest honor of my life has been to work alongside Border Patrol agents at our borders and in the interior of the United States. It’s been humbling to observe how hard our agents work under incredibly challenging circumstances.”

Following his reassignment, Bovino returned to serve as the Border Patrol Division Chief in El Centro, California. In mid-2025, he and his team were dispatched to Los Angeles, where their efforts to arrest illegal immigrants led to local criticism, including confrontations with Mayor Karen Bass. This operation eventually expanded to include other cities before concluding in Minneapolis.

As time went on, criticism of Bovino and his colleagues grew, particularly from Democrats who accused them of being excessively aggressive in their approach. There were concerns they were targeting not only undocumented immigrants but also individuals with no criminal records.

In Minneapolis, the situation escalated, with civilians disrupting police activities, leading to further complications. Unfortunately, Good was fatally shot by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as they closed in on his location.

Authorities reported that Preti was killed after allegedly attempting to disarm immigration officers while armed with a 9mm handgun. This series of events has intensified scrutiny and debate surrounding the objectives and methods of federal immigration enforcement.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security and the Border Patrol for further comments.
