Grijalva bows out of seeking top Democratic spot on Natural Resources

House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) has held the committee since 2019 following health concerns and a challenge from Rep. Jared Huffman (D). has decided to step down as the top Democrat on the committee and will no longer seek to remain the top Democrat on the committee. -California).

“After much consideration, I have decided that now is the right time to carry on the torch as the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee for the 119th Congress. I do not make this decision lightly,” Grijalva said in a statement Monday.

“I remain focused on improving health, increasing mobility, and serving our district during what is likely to be an unprecedented and challenging time for our community.”

Grijalva announced his diagnosis of unspecified cancer in April and had been absent from the Capitol for an extended period of time for treatment. He has also said that his 12th and final term will be his last, and that he does not intend to seek re-election in 2026.

But before Grijalva resigned in November, Huffman announced he would become the ranking member of the Natural Resources Committee.

In his letter announcing his candidacy, Huffman asked the committee's Democrats to nominate Grijalva as an “emeritus member.”

“I look forward to him being a key partner in guiding the committee through the challenges and opportunities of the next two years,” Huffman said in the letter.

Grijalva did not endorse Huffman as his successor in a statement.

“My colleagues and I will protect our nation's rich natural and cultural heritage, advance justice for communities affected by pollution, elevate the voices of indigenous peoples, respect tribal sovereignty, and support the decolonization of U.S. territories. I am incredibly proud of the accomplishments we have fought for and securing a cleaner, safer climate and energy future for all Americans,” Grijalva said in a statement.
