NYPD Officer Fires at Machete-Wielding Man in Grand Central Terminal Incident

Recently released body camera footage reveals the intense moment when an NYPD officer discharged his weapon at a machete-wielding man inside Grand Central Terminal last month.

In the footage that the New York City Police Department shared on Friday, two officers are seen patrolling the transit hub on April 11 when Anthony Griffin, holding a sizable machete, began ascending the stairs from subway platforms 4, 5, and 6.

Officers repeatedly called out for the 44-year-old to drop the weapon—over 20 times, in fact.

Griffin, arms outstretched and brandishing a 17-inch knife in one hand, shouted “Shoot me” while running back down the stairs to the platform.

The video captures Detective Ryan Giuffre chasing the suspect with his weapon drawn, as Griffin continued to approach the officers, swinging the machete despite numerous warnings to stop.

“Listen, get on the ground,” Giuffre pleaded, retreating from Griffin’s erratic behavior.

“Tell me the truth. No one wants to hurt you. We can talk about this. Just come down. I’m not going to ask you again, please. Let us help you,” he continued.

Griffin ominously announced, “I’m Lucifer,” before moving toward Giuffre, who then fired two shots, bringing Griffin to the ground.

Emergency services transported him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward, according to police reports.

In addition to the chaotic confrontation, it was noted that two detectives who were on duty during the incident also required hospital treatment for tinnitus.

Before this critical encounter, Griffin reportedly went on a rampage on the platform just before 9:40 a.m., attacking three elderly individuals.

According to police, an 85-year-old man suffered a deep gash to his head, a 65-year-old man also sustained a head injury, and a 70-year-old woman was cut on her shoulder. All victims were assessed in stable condition after being taken to a local hospital.

An investigation regarding the police-involved shooting is currently underway.
