Grimes splits opinion among fans with her new face tattoo

Fans of Grimes found themselves “very confused,” expressing mixed feelings after the singer unveiled her new, unusual tattoo.

She revealed the barely visible ink near her left eye through an Instagram post on Wednesday, noting, “I spent about 10 years emotionally trying to get a face tattoo, but it was like I drew so much on my face that literally no one noticed,” in her caption. Her parents even appeared in her latest music video while recording the new ink.

Grimes continued to express her admiration for the tattoo artist, stating, “I think @glyphomancer is doing something really fresh and innovative, especially with his work on facial tattoos. There’s real beauty, delicacy, and innovation here. I feel like tattoos are in a crazy renaissance era where they’re kind of underappreciated.” She later added on X that, while her new face tattoo isn’t very noticeable, it’s still her favorite.

The tattoo, created by artist Gryphomancer, is a form of cybersigilistic tattooing—a blend of ancient symbolism and a cyberpunk aesthetic. Grimes, who is 37, showcased the tattoo in a new music video for “Artificial Angels,” which premiered on Friday.

Responses from fans have been quite varied. One follower admitted to being “shocked” by the design, while another humorously likened it to “ringworm.” Comments ranged from confusion—like someone questioning if the tattoo was even visible—to compliments praising her look with the new ink.

Interestingly, some enthusiasts expressed their love for the tattoo, with one fan noting, “I especially like the blonde hair,” and others affirming that she looks great with it.

In addition to her recent tattoo, Grimes has distinctive ink on her leg and once mentioned wanting to be “covered” with an “alien” tattoo. She had previously teased about the possibility of getting a white ink tattoo on her face, asking her followers for thoughts on the idea back when she considered it.

With her face tattoo, Grimes joins a notable list of celebrities personalized with facial ink. Others in this group include Justin Bieber, Amanda Bynes, and Post Malone.
