Grizzly bear corners hikers on trail in frightening experience

Hikers’ Close Encounter with Grizzly Bear in Alaska

A recent hike in Alaska turned into quite a nail-biter when three hikers faced a grizzly bear during their adventure. Approaching a bend on the trail, they unexpectedly came across a bear, affectionately named “Scuba Sue,” who was on the hunt for salmon near the Annan Creek Wildlife Observatory in southeastern Alaska.

On a segment of “Fox & Friends Weekend,” the hikers shared how they stayed composed by following safety guidelines provided by park rangers when they found themselves cornered on the narrow path.

Dr. Michelle Lynn Thaler, one of the hikers, recounted their experience, saying, “We were actually looking for bears, anticipating the salmon to come up the river. Earlier, we had spotted several black bears. But then, when we returned to the trail, we encountered this grizzly.” The situation escalated quickly as they found themselves face-to-face with the animal.

Video footage from the scene showcased the bear approaching the group. They managed to communicate with the bear while cautiously stepping back to allow it to pass.

“It was definitely scary,” said hiker Tanya Thompson, recalling their panic. “We remembered what the ranger advised us: to talk to the bear to calm it down and let it move on.” She pointed out that at that particular spot, there was no way off the trail, so backing away was their only option.

Hiker Tony Cutralo mentioned that they were well-aware of the bear-rich environment and had seen bear tracks earlier on their hike, but the bear’s proximity was still jarring. After a few tense moments, the bear walked by and continued along its path. Thaler noted that delays in salmon runs this season might leave local wildlife, including bears, more desperate for food, leading to increased encounters.

In light of such encounters, the National Park Service offers advice for hikers facing bears. They recommend calmly talking to the animals, letting them know you’re not a threat, and avoiding sudden movements.

It’s a reminder that while nature is mesmerizing, it can also be unpredictable. Staying informed and prepared is key to enjoying the great outdoors safely.
