Grok's deepfake controversies are jeopardizing America's future

You’ve likely seen reports about Grok creating explicit images of real individuals without their consent and sharing them online. If you’ve been scrolling through your X feed, these images might have popped up. This situation is not just a challenge for the platform; it raises serious concerns, especially considering how much weight the future of the Republic carries on the shoulders of X and Elon Musk.

The backstory

As this situation evolves rapidly, more details are expected to surface. Here’s what we know so far.

Recently, many X users were found using Grok to digitally strip clothing from photos of real women, placing them in bikinis and other revealing attire. To make matters worse, some users targeted minors, including a young star from “Stranger Things,” insisting on changing their costumes to inappropriate ones, and Grok obliged.

We must consider the implications of Grok’s actions for X’s global reputation.

After significant backlash, Elon Musk stated firmly that “those who use Grok to produce illegal content will face the same penalties as if they had posted that content.” The X Safety account later echoed this warning, indicating that the platform is actively addressing CSAM content by removing images, suspending accounts, and collaborating with local law enforcement when necessary.

Yet, that still wasn’t sufficient. While Musk and others have taken down illegal images of minors, users continued to strip clothing from photos of real adult women without consequence. As a result, the US Democratic Party has urged Apple and Google to consider removing X from their app stores (though that hasn’t happened yet). Meanwhile, the UK has passed legislation to criminalize the creation of intimate images without consent, leading Malaysia and Indonesia to block Grok entirely.

In response, Musk has decided to limit Grok’s image creation and editing tools to paid users, making it easier to link illegal activities to specific accounts and identities.

Self-imposed challenges

The issue with Grok generating non-consensual images is troubling enough on its own. The United States has laws against non-consensual intimate content that prohibit blackmailing or distributing private images or videos. The Take It Down Act aims to protect victims, and posting such content on X violates its user policies.

What’s truly frustrating is that this situation didn’t have to arise. The ability of Grok to strip away clothing from both adult and minor users is a self-created issue that could have been avoided had proper guardrails been put in place. It shouldn’t have been an option initially, but now that it is, we have to tackle the consequences. More critically, we need to understand how Grok’s actions could impact X’s global standing.

1. News of free speech under threat

Various foreign nations are already looking for reasons to ban X since Musk embraced the idea of free speech in 2022. This recent incident could give countries like the UK, Malaysia, and Indonesia justification to deem X a “danger” to their citizens and pursue legislation to limit or outright block access. It’s unfortunate because X is one of the few platforms that truly supports free speech. When users lose access to X, they also lose access to vital information.

2. Political loyalty dilemma

A government that already has issues with Elon Musk may face a challenge relating to Grok’s legal mistakes. This situation will test the loyalties of both Musk and those American politicians who are friends with him. Lawmakers on the right have the difficult choice of either regulating Grok to protect users affected by its photos, or allowing Musk more control over the platform. On the left, criticism will continue regardless of what actions are taken.

3. Risks if Grok spirals

This deepfake controversy has made users, especially young women, hesitant to share their photos on the platform. There’s the constant worry that someone might create and distribute intimate images generated from their content. Meanwhile, those seeking news and information on X must also dodge inappropriate images in their feeds. Grok’s conduct is creating a sense of anxiety around using X, which isn’t how it should be. With Threads gaining popularity, this is not the direction X should be going.

4. Grok’s flawed capabilities

At the very least, the images produced by Grok warrant serious legal questions. This functionality should not exist, whether it’s accessible to the general public or locked behind a paywall. Other AI platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini have put safeguards in place to prevent similar content. Sure, Grok champions free speech, which is commendable, but deepfakes cross a line that shouldn’t be crossed. Creating intimate content without consent and sharing it online is, quite simply, illegal. Musk’s AI platform is advanced enough to not devolve into a tool for adult content creation, so this feature should be stripped from Grok entirely.

The importance of X

X is more than just a social network; it stands as a bastion of free speech where individuals from diverse backgrounds can express their thoughts and share ideas that might otherwise go unheard.

Thanks to X, the truth about numerous topics that would usually remain hidden has come to light. Just last week, footage emerged of Renee Good, showing her attempt to run over an ICE officer who then acted in self-defense. Without X, misleading left-wing media narratives would have misrepresented her as an innocent bystander without revealing the actual events. Before that, we witnessed protests in Iran as its people fought for freedom, and before that, Nick Shirley exposed a massive fraud case unfolding in Minnesota involving a Somali-run enterprise. Again and again, X has proven vital.

X plays a crucial role in our political landscape, helping individuals combat lies, scandals, and censorship, among other issues. In the future, when the moment is right, we’ll need X again. This platform is too significant to be merely a testing ground for Grok’s advanced features. The health of the digital public square, along with the capacity to challenge corruption, is interconnected with X maintaining its identity as a free, open, and honest platform. It would be regrettable if Grok’s unchecked abilities posed a threat to that.
