Groups connected to Soros support Virginia redistricting battle funded by a network of undisclosed money

Funding from Soros supports Virginia vote that may alter House map

Virginians for Fair Elections, a key organization pushing for a referendum allowing modifications to Virginia’s congressional maps, is reportedly receiving substantial funds from networks linked to George Soros and various Democratic Party officials. This financial backing arrives just ahead of an important vote this Tuesday, which could enable House Democrats to seize four additional seats from Republicans as the midterm elections approach. Notable Democratic figures, including Nancy Pelosi and the American Federation of Teachers, are also contributing to this effort.

Other significant left-leaning organizations involved in funding Democrat-led redistricting initiatives in Virginia include the Service Employees International Union, Eric Holder’s National Democratic District Committee, the League of Conservation Voters, and the Democratic Party’s U.S. House campaign arm. These contributions were highlighted in a review of state campaign finance records by Fox News Digital, with the Virginia Public Access Project keeping track of public expenditure in the state.

Republican strategist Matt Gorman commented on the situation, stating, “Dark money is flowing into Virginia. Democrats often talk about living costs in their campaigns, but since taking office, they’ve only increased taxes and manipulated elections. By 2026, this trend will be seen nationwide.”

In early March, it was reported that leftist groups aiming to redraw Virginia’s maps had raised over $38 million, with the figure climbing to more than $64 million by mid-April, directly before the upcoming referendum. The largest donor to Virginians for Fair Elections remains House Majority Forward, which has gifted more than $38 million.

Furthermore, organizations connected to Soros have emerged as significant donors, with the Policy Reform Fund, established by Soros, and The Fairness Project receiving substantial financial contributions from various groups, including the Sixteen Thirty Fund and the Hopewell Fund.

American Opportunity Action, another prominent supporter of Virginians for Fair Elections, is described as a “pure pass-through organization.” Its recent establishment means it hasn’t yet submitted required IRS documentation, yet it’s ranked among the top contributors, as noted by state finance records.

Prominent Democrats outside Virginia, including Nancy Pelosi, Pete Aguilar, and Catherine Clark, have collectively donated tens of thousands of dollars to support the cause. Virginia Democratic Senator Tim Kaine’s PAC contributed $100,000, while the Virginia Democratic Party provided almost $1 million.

Additionally, Eric Holder’s group has made over $10,000 in contributions to left-wing redistricting efforts, while unions like SEIU and AFT have also made substantial donations. Fox News Digital made attempts to reach Soros’ Open Society Foundations for comment but received no reply.

Alexis Magnan Caraway, a spokesperson for The Fairness Project, expressed that, “In a democracy, one cannot allow an entire state to manipulate congressional maps for the benefit of a single entity. We must act. This amendment is a temporary adjustment that grants Virginia voters a voice and adapts to the current situation. After the 2030 Census, the bipartisan redistricting process will resume.”

On the other hand, Virginians for Fair Maps, a group opposing the Democratic-led redistricting, reported raising just over $3 million. While they appear to be gaining strength, their fundraising lags behind the notable totals amassed by Virginians for Fair Elections.

As of the referendum vote, the opposing group has nearly reached $20 million in funds, primarily from its own organization, which is also a major supporter of the Virginia Republican Party. Individual contributions include $50,000 from the National Shooting Sports Foundation and $100,000 from a wealthy real estate investor predominantly aligned with Republican campaigns.

Former Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has reportedly donated over $500,000 to initiatives opposing the redistricting plan and continues to be a vocal advocate against it, despite no longer holding office. Peter Thiel, a well-known Republican donor, has also contributed to anti-redistricting efforts parallel to those of Fair Maps in Virginia.
