Podcaster Critiques ICE Actions
On Wednesday evening, podcaster Jennifer Welch criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, suggesting they act like “monsters” by tearing families apart.
After protests erupted in Los Angeles following an ICE operation, several cities have called for a pause on these activities, aiming to “restore order” in the area. During her appearance on “CNN Newsnight,” Welch contended that the deported individuals were not being processed fairly. This came after Republican strategist Shamichael Singleton mentioned the situation could be used to the Democrats’ advantage.
“You’re worried about optics. I’m focused on humans,” Welch expressed. “Do you know why those men in black masks separate families? It’s because we’re not monsters. Many of the individuals Trump detained are unsure of their legal status or any criminal background because they’ve been denied proper proceedings. We care because we’re not monsters.”
In another related discussion, Democrats called for the reinstatement of Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a member of the Salvadoran gang MS-13. They claimed he was deported without proper procedures. In response, the Trump administration released a 13-page document detailing evidence against him.
Abrego Garcia had been detained by the Tennessee Highway Patrol on human trafficking charges in 2022 but was later released at the Biden administration’s request, according to the Tennessee Star. He returned to the U.S. on June 6 to face federal charges for human trafficking.
President Trump has made illegal immigration a focal point of his second term, emphasizing this issue during the 2024 presidential campaign. He has issued multiple executive orders targeting illegal immigration and enhancing border security. As of January 20th, there will be a designation of Mexican drug cartels and the Venezuelan gang TDA as foreign terrorist organizations. Furthermore, a law from 1798, known as the Alien Enemies Act, has been invoked to expedite the deportation of gang members.
The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comments regarding these developments.
