Gulf Cartel Kills Leading Mexican Federal Prosecutor in Attack on Border City

Gunmen Target Federal Prosecutor in Tamaulipas

A group of assailants, believed to be affiliated with the Gulf Cartel, killed a federal prosecutor in a brazen attack in the border city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas. Armed with automatic weapons and specialized ammunition, they executed the attack while government officials grappled with public backlash. The shooters managed to escape without being apprehended.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon on Boulevard Hidalgo, a major thoroughfare in Reynosa. Gunmen in white SUVs cut off the car driven by Ernesto Shootruck Vasquez Reyna, opening fire with both handguns and automatic weapons. Amid the chaos, other cartel members set up blockades on key roads, using spikes to impede pursuing authorities, allowing their comrades to flee.

Vazquez Reyna served as the regional representative for the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) in Mexico. Following the attack, the Tamaulipas government released a statement that downplayed the severity of the situation, suggesting that only government personnel had been affected and that bystanders had merely witnessed a shootout. Interestingly, the statement failed to mention the automatic weapons or specialized rounds used by the attackers.

This targeted killing comes soon after Mexican authorities intensified efforts against fuel theft networks operated by the Gulf Cartel, responding to pressure from the U.S. government.

According to sources within Mexican law enforcement, these attacks suggest a disruption within the cartel’s leadership factions. The retaliation directed at federal officials may indicate a pushback against perceived government inadequacies in maintaining order, especially concerning the cartel’s interests.
