Texas Gun Rights Leaders Challenge Sen. Cornyn’s Second Amendment Stance

Chris McNutt, president of Texas Gun Rights, along with other advocates for the Second Amendment, is raising concerns about Senator John Cornyn (R). They argue that his backing of Biden-era gun regulations could jeopardize his reputation as a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment.

On October 27, 2025, it was reported that McNutt had delivered a letter to the White House, urging former President Trump to withhold support from Cornyn.

“This isn’t just a partisan issue. It’s a matter of principle,” McNutt stated.

He added, “Gun owners in Texas remember who laid the groundwork for Biden’s gun control measures. We can’t just stand by while those responsible seek our votes.”

Republican Representative Wesley Hunt is shaping up to be one of Cornyn’s primary challengers. He commented, “You can’t rewrite Sen. Cornyn’s history regarding the Second Amendment. Taking rights away from law-abiding citizens isn’t ‘progress.’ Texans are aware of this.”

Shortly after the tragic Uvalde Elementary School shooting on May 27, 2022, reports surfaced that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had directed Cornyn to collaborate with Democrats on “bipartisan” gun control legislation.

On June 12, 2022, an agreement on gun control between Senate Democrats and Republicans was officially announced.

Later, on July 11, 2022, it was noted that President Biden expressed gratitude towards Cornyn for his role in passing the Bipartisan Safe Areas Act, a gun control initiative developed in conjunction with Democrats.

More recently, a conversation from August 13, 2025, highlighted an exchange between Cornyn and Texas Gun Rights, where Cornyn allegedly claimed he couldn’t recall backing Biden’s gun control efforts.
