Gun-toting DoorDash driver turns the tables on wannabe carjackers

Last week, an armed DoorDash driver turned the tables on several potential carjackings in a Philadelphia suburb.

The driver arrived just after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to deliver food to Linwood Gardens Apartments in the 1900 block of Humphrey Mary Way in Cheltenham Township. WCAU-TV reportedThat’s what the police said.

“Delivery drivers feel the need to be armed to protect themselves, and incidents like this reinforce that philosophy.”

That’s when they confronted the DoorDash driver and two people, one with a gun, police told the station.

The driver told police that one of the suspects asked for the keys, then the driver threw the keys on the ground, WCAU reported.

Police said the driver, who was armed with a legally purchased gun and a carry permit, heard gunshots shortly after and opened fire.

The two suspects fled, but WCAU said a K-9 found 18-year-old Divine Allen Hargrove hiding near the garage.

According to the department’s video report, Hargrove was also near a ghost gun, which police said was loaded with an extended magazine containing 26 live rounds.

Officials said Hargrove told police he was the victim, but the DoorDash driver gave a description of the man who approached him and Hargrove matched the description. WCAU said.

After failing to post bail, Hargrove was charged with robbery and gun charges and taken to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility. WTXF-TV reported. Bail was set at $100,000 cash, WCAU added.

The other suspect fled and no one was injured, WCAU said.

Investigators added that the order was not placed by a resident of the DoorDash delivery address, WTXF reported.

Officials told the station that similar robberies have been reported in the area.

Cheltenham Police Lt. Andrew Snyder told WCAU that investigators believe carjacking was the suspect’s motive, as DoorDash drivers do not handle cash.

Snyder told the station, adding that delivery drivers “feel the need to be armed to protect themselves, and incidents like this reinforce that philosophy.”

Snyder also told WCAU that police “would love to hear from anyone who may have been exposed to something similar, but just didn’t report it or didn’t want to get involved.” told.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cheltenham Police at 215-885-1600 or email PoliceTips@CheltenhamPA.gov, WCAU added.
