Tragic Shooting at Youth Football Game in Baltimore
A 12-year-old girl lost her life, and three adults were injured when two gunmen reportedly opened fire during a dispute close to a youth football game in Baltimore, Maryland, as confirmed by authorities on Saturday.
The young girl was sadly caught in the gunfire at Leon Day Park, where a local youth football league was celebrating its homecoming event. Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley shared details during a press briefing, explaining that the conflict likely erupted over a parking dispute.
“What we know is that there was some type of argument between two cowards, and of course, they both opened fire on each other,” Worley stated.
“In the crossfire, a 12-year-old little girl who was probably down there watching football was shot and killed,” he added, emphasizing the tragic nature of the incident.
As of Saturday evening, police were actively searching for at least two male suspects, but no arrests had been made by late that night.
Baltimore police reported responding to multiple calls about gunfire at around 6:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Franklintown Road.
Upon arrival, officers found a 25-year-old woman with a gunshot wound and the 12-year-old girl, who was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately later pronounced dead.
Additionally, a 28-year-old man and a 23-year-old man arrived at nearby hospitals seeking care for their gunshot injuries, but all three surviving victims were reported to be in stable condition.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed his outrage regarding the incident, stressing that it stemmed from two adults failing to settle their differences without resorting to violence.
“Two grown men got into an argument and now a 12-year-old is gone,” he remarked, describing the event as “one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Scott noted that the girl’s tragic death would leave a significant impact on the community, extending his sympathies to the grieving family. “We’re never gonna see her full potential,” he lamented. “Her family’s gonna be hurting for this for the rest of their life. Her classmates are going to be hurting, her community’s going to be hurting.”
Authorities are urging anyone who may have information about the shooting to contact homicide detectives at 410-396-2100 or reach out to Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland.
