Shooting Incident Outside Michigan Church
Authorities report that the shooter who opened fire outside a church in Michigan over the weekend was a local resident. Notably, this individual was attending the service alongside his mother.
Brian Anthony Browning, 31, began filming outside Crosspoint Community Church in Wayne shortly after 11 a.m. on Sunday. Witnesses indicated that he loaded his arms with ammunition, raising concerns among those present.
A woman was heard urging parishioners to take cover, calling out, “Everyone behind me! Everyone please, come in the back!”
Browning’s mother is known to be a member of the church, and he reportedly had attended several services there over the past year.
The reasons behind the shooting remain unclear. Browning was shot and killed by church security before he could enter the building, although one guard was also injured in the process.
At the time, Browning was armed with an AR-15-style rifle and had numerous loaded magazines, along with a semi-automatic handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
Reports indicated that he was behaving suspiciously outside the church prior to the incident. According to Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong, he was wearing a tactical vest when he exited his vehicle and began shooting.
In a bold move, senior pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. tried to confront him by driving his pickup truck at Browning.
The church’s security team responded by locking the front doors and engaging in a shootout with Browning, ultimately leading to his death at the hands of a security guard. Tragically, at least two guards were injured before they could gain access to the church.
Despite attempts by officers to provide lifesaving care to Browning, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, the injured guards were reported to be in stable condition after being treated at the hospital.
At Browning’s residence, additional firearms, handguns, and ammunition were discovered by authorities. Strikingly, he had no prior contact with law enforcement or a criminal record.
Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong commended the actions of the church staff, stating, “We are grateful for the heroic actions of our church staff. They have undoubtedly saved many lives and prevented mass shootings.”
