Gunman Killed After Firing at Police Outside Israeli Embassy in Jordan

A gunman was killed in a shooting outside the Israeli embassy in Amman, Jordan, early Sunday morning, according to news reports.

Reuters reported:

A gunman was killed and three police officers were injured in a shooting near the Israeli embassy in neighboring Jordan, security sources and state media said Sunday.

Citing public security, state news agency Petra said police had fired on a gunman who fired at police on patrol in Amman's Rabia district, adding that an investigation was underway.

Mohamed Momani, Jordan's communications minister, said the shooting was a terrorist attack targeting the country's security forces. He said in a statement that an investigation into the attack was ongoing.

The Israeli embassy in Jordan is a frequent target of pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Jordan is a monarchy ruled by a Bedouin elite. The majority of residents are of Palestinian origin.

Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty 30 years ago, and Israel supplies Jordanians with water. In recent years, Israelis have frequently visited Jordan as tourists.

However, the opposite is not true; Jordanians who visit Israel will be shunned by other Jordanians. In 2006, the trade union representing Jordanian journalists declared The plan is to punish members who actually visit Israel to report on the country.

This incident occurred just as another terrorist attack occurred in the United Arab Emirates, the murder of Ravi.
