Ambush on Police Officers in Michoacán
Gunmen from the Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) ambushed a group of police officers, resulting in five fatalities among them. Authorities have acknowledged the attack, but actions to apprehend the attackers remain scarce.
The incident took place this week near Nahuatzen in the western state of Michoacán. Ten police officers were patrolling in two vehicles when a substantial group of armed individuals, in at least seven vehicles, blocked their way and opened fire, according to law enforcement sources.
The officers managed to fend off the attackers and called for assistance. Unfortunately, by the time military support arrived, the assailants had already left. Paramedics rushed the injured officers to a nearby hospital, while state investigators processed the crime scene and retrieved the bodies of the deceased officers.
This assault has been linked to the CJNG, a formidable drug cartel active across Mexico, designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government in 2025. Despite substantial public and political pressure, the Mexican government has yet to classify this cartel similarly to others.
This attack unfolds amidst ongoing tensions, as the Mexican government remains resistant to U.S. demands to effectively dismantle drug cartels. President Claudia Sheinbaum has been actively defending the governor of Sinaloa, who faces drug trafficking charges in the U.S., along with his associates against criminal charges. Reports indicate that these actions are connected to other politicians within her party, MORENA.
Sheinbaum’s decisions have strained relations with the United States, yet she maintains that her efforts are aimed at safeguarding Mexico’s national sovereignty and minimizing foreign interference.
