Gunmen Behead Mexican Mayor Six Days After Sworn In

Gunmen beheaded Guerrero, the mayor of the capital, just six days after he took office, despite repeated claims by the Mexican government about reducing crime. The killings sparked outrage among national politicians because the victims belonged to political parties opposed to Mexico's ruling party, Morena.

The killing occurred Sunday afternoon, when gunmen left the body of Alejandro Arcos Catalan, the new mayor of Chilpancingo in Guerrero state. The perpetrators left his headless body inside the car and his head on the roof of the car.

Arcos Catalan's killing occurred just three days after gunmen killed Chilpancingo Mayor Francisco Tapia in a separate attack, causing great concern in the city.

The state's governor, Evelyn Salgado, expressed outrage over the killing and said she had ordered a thorough investigation. Salgado's comments seem ironic because he has spent much of his time in power claiming that security has improved under his administration and that of Morena's party.

The killing is expected to be a hot topic of political debate for Mexico's new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, as Arcos Catalunya was from the opposition party and defeated Morena.

Opposition PRI leader Alejandro Moreno immediately took to social media to call on federal authorities to investigate the incident, accusing Guerrero state of failing to deal with the ongoing security crisis.

Marco Cortés, leader of another opposition party, PAN, also condemned the killing on social media, claiming that the security strategy implemented by the Morena party had not yielded results. As Breitbart Texas reported, members of the Morena party called it “Embraces, Not Bullets” (Barazos of Abrazos), which focuses on social programs rather than police or military operations against cartels. We are moving forward with our strategy.
