Attack in Mexico Highlights Ongoing Cartel Violence

A violent incident occurred on Sunday evening in Uriangato, Guanajuato, where gunmen attacked a bar in what appears to be a clash between rival criminal organizations. Reports indicate that four armed individuals arrived in white pickups, got out, and began shooting. Initial accounts suggested that at least eight people lost their lives. However, by Monday morning, the local mayor released a statement asserting that only one woman had reported injuries and no fatalities had been confirmed.

Surveillance footage captured the chaos, showing bystanders, including cyclists, trying to find cover. Fortunately, the gunfire didn’t strike the cyclist, and even a dog managed to escape unharmed.

Additional reports suggest that the attackers set several homes ablaze before fleeing the scene. Local authorities expressed concern over the violence but attempted to minimize its impact on the community.

This surge in mass shootings and arson is occurring amid chaotic shifts within the Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG), a major player in the region’s drug trade. CJNG is embroiled in a fierce conflict with the Cartel Santa Rosa de Lima, each group notorious for violent, terrorist-style attacks and the use of explosives.

The CJNG, along with five other drug cartels, was designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the Trump administration earlier this year.
