Mexican authorities are searching for at least one kidnapper after two gunmen rescued a kidnapper and another man during a prisoner transfer in central Mexico.
The incident occurred this week in Mexico's Hidalgo state as a group of correctional officers transferred prisoners from a state prison near the town of Mixuiaarato to a local courthouse in the city of Progreso de Obregon. According to information provided by Attorney General Hidalgo, during the transfer, two gunmen in a sedan were able to intercept the prisoner transport convoy, overwhelm the security guards, and rescue the two kidnappers.
The perpetrators are believed to have abandoned a white Nissan Tsuru several miles away, where they changed cars. Authorities recaptured one of the prisoners as part of a series of large-scale searches supported by the federal government. The other suspect and gunman remain at large.
The escaped prisoners were identified as 46-year-old Luis Fernando Ugalde Perez and 27-year-old Juan Pablo Sánchez Mendoza. Both men, along with a third suspect, face kidnapping charges in connection with a Feb. 27 incident in which they kidnapped a man for ransom at a secret location in Xochitlan. The man was reportedly held hostage until state police rescued him and arrested the three suspects.
The rescue comes as carjackings, armed robberies and kidnappings are on the rise in central Mexico, even though Mexican authorities say crime is on the decline.
