Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke Reflect on Their Time in Great Expectations
Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke recently came together to reminisce about their experience filming the 1998 adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, directed by Alfonso Cuaron.
During their conversation, Hawke, aged 55, brought up a particular moment. He asked Paltrow, 53, “Do you remember when Alfonso proposed the love scene?” This exchange was part of a video released on December 17.
The scene they discussed was one that never ended up being filmed. It was meant to showcase Paltrow’s character, Estella, in a compromising situation with Hawke’s Finnegan.
Paltrow reminisced, “I thought, ‘Oh my god, my dad is going to have a heart attack,’” recalling her initial reaction to the proposal.
As Hawke elaborated, Cuaron had intriguingly pitched the idea for this intimate scene to both actors nearly three decades ago. The director vividly described how the camera would travel down Paltrow’s body and then up to her face, portraying a pinnacle of ecstasy, which he dramatically stated would “explode like the sun.”
That’s when Paltrow interjected her thoughts, with Hawke remembering, “I looked at Gwyneth, and Gwyneth was like, ‘Alfonso, I would never do that,’” prompting laughter from Paltrow.
Paltrow revealed that early in her career, she felt particularly self-conscious about her father and grandfather potentially watching such scenes, which made the idea quite troubling for her.
Today, she mentioned feeling differently, stating, “I don’t care right now.”
Hawke praised her for being mindful about the implications such scenes could have on her family,
acknowledging her awareness of the industry’s nature.
As they continued their discussion, they also reflected on their evolving careers nearly 30 years after Great Expectations. Hawke’s latest project, Blue Moon, features him as Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart, released on October 24.
Paltrow, on the other hand, portrays Kay Stone in the newly released film Marty Supreme alongside Timothée Chalamet.
Hawke emphasized their youthful ambition, noting, “We were very idealistic young people.” He recognized Paltrow for her unique presence, while she echoed that they have largely remained the same people despite life’s ups and downs.
Interestingly, unlike Great Expectations, Marty Supreme includes several intimate scenes between Paltrow and Chalamet. Paltrow addressed the age difference—almost 24 years—during a conversation earlier this year, jokingly referring to herself as “109 years old” while acknowledging the film’s heavy emphasis on sexual content.
To emphasize, she remarked, “There’s a lot of sex in this movie—many, a lot.”
