A hacking group with ties to Iran has threatened to release emails from several high-ranking aides of former President Trump, as reported by Reuters.
The hacker claims to possess around 100 gigabytes of emails from Trump officials, mentioning names like White House Chief Susie Wills, Trump’s lawyer Lindsay Harrigan, advisor Roger Stone, and adult film star Stormy Daniels, who is connected to the Manhattan Hash Money Trial involving Trump.
On Monday, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) condemned the threat from the hacker as a “calculated smear campaign.”
Marci McCarthy, the spokesperson for CISA, stated, “Foreign enemies are looking to unlawfully exploit material that has been discredited and allegedly stolen, aiming to cause division.” She shared these comments on social media platform X.
McCarthy described the attack as mere digital propaganda targeting Trump, asserting that it aims to tarnish his reputation and discredit dedicated public servants. “These criminals will be identified and face justice,” she added.
This hacking group had previously attempted to leak stolen information from Trump’s campaign to various media outlets and the Biden campaign during the 2024 elections.
Recent warnings from U.S. agencies have indicated that these hackers remain active, suggesting that, despite a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, they could still target U.S. entities and networks.
CISA underscored that defense firms related to Israeli research and defense, along with the FBI, the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center, and the NSA, are experiencing an “increasing risk” of cyber incidents.
The Department of Homeland Security has also alerted about a potential “low-level” cyberattack on U.S. networks following Trump’s recent airstrikes on various Iranian nuclear sites.
After the strikes, Trump’s social media platforms faced reporting issues, and Iranian hackers later claimed responsibility for the cyberattacks on those sites.
