Hair transplant caused unusual side effect — doctor surprised: 'This has never occurred before'

Unanticipated Hair Color Change After Surgery

Nini B., a nurse and content creator from Los Angeles, experienced a surprising aftermath after having her hairline lowered through surgery.

The procedure left her with gray hair, an unexpected side effect that astonished her surgeon.

Throughout her life, Nini felt self-conscious about her appearance, particularly concerning her forehead. But it was her rise in front of the camera that really made her anxiety about her looks escalate, she mentioned in an interview.

“I’ve become increasingly focused on refining my look, especially for my audience,” Nini shared.

After attempting various hair treatments without success, she opted for a hairline lowering procedure that included a transplant.

In February, Dr. Robert Drummond, an experienced surgeon, performed the surgery, transplanting 2,500 hair follicles from the back of Nini’s head to her new hairline. She carefully documented her experience on social media, hoping for a “natural-looking, lower hairline” to expand her styling options.

Initially, Nini was pleased with the surgery’s outcome, stating that Dr. Drummond achieved the look she desired.

However, about two to three weeks post-surgery, she noticed that her new hair, along with some of her existing hair, was turning gray. This was quite different from her natural brunette shade, which had seen minimal graying before.

The surgeon noted that such a side effect is exceptionally rare, and it wasn’t something they had discussed prior to the procedure.

“There are very few documented instances of this,” Dr. Drummond explained. “In all the patients we’ve transplanted, nothing like this has ever occurred.” His lead technician, with over 20 years of experience, also voiced surprise, noting she had not seen such a case either.

Dr. Drummond suggested that Nini’s case might serve as a “case study” for future patients, as there’s little understanding of why this occurs in some surgeries. He remarked that gray hair often results from various factors, including genetics, environment, and stress.

He also discussed a common post-surgical occurrence known as shock loss, where nearby hair follicles enter a resting phase due to the stress surrounding the transplant.

Nini noted that she doesn’t feel attractive during this healing period, confessing she has to prepare herself to feel “not pretty” for some time until things stabilize.

According to Dr. Drummond, there’s stress on both the donor and recipient sides of the scalp in such procedures, implying that the scalp may react negatively to these kinds of manipulations.

As for whether Nini’s hair will revert to its original color, the surgeon indicated that only time will tell.

Though it will take several months to see the final results, Nini expressed mixed feelings about her situation.

She noticed some improvement around the transplanted hair site, though there had been no changes elsewhere, which she believes contributes to the hair’s depigmentation post-transplant.

“Right now, I’m getting used to having bangs, and they help a bit,” Nini remarked.
