Jeffries Withholds Support for NYC Mayoral Candidate Mamdani
House Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries did not endorse New York City’s Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday, reflecting a trend among Democrats to shy away from supporting socialist candidates.
When reporters questioned Jeffries about his lack of public support, especially with the general election just two months away, he deflected their inquiries. Despite having met Mamdani twice, he chose not to show any solid backing for the democratic socialist. “What’s taking you so long to support him? Is there something you need to hear?” a reporter pressed during a Democratic press conference.
“Looking out,” was Jeffries’ brief response, accompanied by a smile.
Later, when asked if he had concerns regarding Mamdani’s political stance, Jeffries again skirted the issue, saying, “Look,” before moving on.
Jeffries’ response indicates that some leading Democrats are having “candid and constructive” discussions with Mamdani, while also acknowledging the campaign’s focus on everyday issues. He had previously engaged in questioning Mamdani’s policy positions during an interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” in August.
“I’m just trying to figure out why we spend so much time discussing Democratic candidates who aren’t even in office yet,” Jeffries said to CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin.
Other prominent New York Democrats, like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Governor Kathy Hochul, have also refrained from endorsing Mamdani publicly. Hochul, in an interview with New York Magazine, mentioned that she has a “disagreement” with democratic socialists but didn’t elaborate on her reservations.
Mamdani is viewed as a strong contender in the general election after an unexpected win over former Governor Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination. While he may face challenges from Cuomo or incumbent Eric Adams in a head-to-head matchup, socialist candidates often perform well in larger, crowded elections, as noted in a recent poll.
Cuomo and Adams are both campaigning independently for mayor but remain registered as Democrats.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has criticized Jeffries for not scrutinizing Mamdani’s far-left agenda. Democratic Representative Laura Gillen from New York has been targeted by the NRCC and stated that Mamdani is “too extreme” to lead the largest city in the country.
“It’s worrying that Leader Jeffries continues to appease radical socialist agendas,” NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella stated on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for Mamdani’s campaign did not respond promptly to requests for comment.
