Democratic Leader Criticizes DHS Secretary
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D.N.Y.) made strong comments regarding cabinet members of the Department of Homeland Security, particularly targeting Secretary Kristi Noem, who has been in the spotlight recently.
During a press conference on Monday, Jeffries stated, “It’s obvious that Kristi Noem is utterly unqualified. Senate Republicans should never have confirmed her.” He expressed regret over her position, saying, “It’s a shame she’s still in charge, and she needs to be removed urgently.”
Criticism regarding Noem, the DHS, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has escalated, especially following a tragic shooting involving ICE in Minneapolis last week.
An ICE agent fatally shot 37-year-old American citizen Renee Nicole Good after she allegedly threatened the agents while they were conducting an enforcement operation. This incident has sparked significant partisan division about the appropriateness of actions taken during the encounter.
Activists Disrupt ICE Operations Amid Minnesota Protests
Jeffries asserted that Good “should be alive today” and accused both Noem and the ICE officer of showing “egregious disregard for human life.” He emphasized that the actions of the DHS and ICE are “completely out of control,” reflecting a broader demand from the public for accountability.
Debate continues on whether Good intentionally drove her car towards the ICE agent or if she was attempting to evade arrest. In response, some federal officials, including Noem, have defended the agent’s use of force, asserting it was a matter of self-defense. They argue that Good was possibly trying to obstruct ICE’s activities in cities governed by Democrats.
Local leaders such as Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz have accused ICE and Republican officials of fostering fear and chaos in the city. They are urging the federal government to halt its operations immediately.
Now, congressional Democrats are considering withholding funding for the DHS unless substantial reforms are pursued, which Jeffries hinted at during the press conference. He noted, “We have a spending bill ahead that could lead to two distinct paths. If Republicans choose to push for a rigid approach on the Homeland Security bill, it will fall on them to navigate the way forward.”
He also called for “common-sense steps” to ensure that ICE operates in alignment with other law enforcement agencies across the country.
The clock is ticking, as federal funding needs to be resolved by January 30th to prevent a partial government shutdown.
