Jeffries Calls for Justification of Trump’s Iran Strike
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has urged President Donald Trump and his top officials to “justify” the recent airstrike carried out by U.S. forces in Iran.
Jeffries stated, “So far, we haven’t seen any evidence to suggest that an offensive strike like this is justified under the War Powers Act or the Constitution.” He added that the intention behind the Trump administration’s actions seems to be to persuade Congress and the American public, a task they appear to have neglected.
Officials from Trump’s administration maintain that the strike complies with the War Powers Act, which mandates that the White House notify Congress within 48 hours of military actions, limiting any operation to 60 days without congressional approval.
Jeffries expressed skepticism, claiming he hasn’t encountered “previous scintillations of evidence” suggesting any immediate threat to the U.S. “If the administration has evidence to back that up, then, you know, let them present it. We’re not elusive,” he remarked.
During a press briefing, Jeffries mentioned he had requested a briefing for several key members on the situation.
Last weekend, U.S. airstrikes targeted three significant nuclear sites in Tehran, with Trump stating on social media that one of the locations was “completely destroyed.”
The response to this action has split the Democratic Party. While some pro-Israel lawmakers have aligned in support of Trump’s decision, more progressive Democrats, such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are pushing for accountability from the president regarding this military operation.
Many lawmakers on the left are expressing concerns about a bipartisan resolution led by Thomas Massey and other members aimed at curtailing Trump’s power to launch attacks on Iran.
Jeffries reiterated his questions during a press conference, underscoring the necessity for Trump’s officials to testify before Congress. “Step one is ensuring the administration presents itself before Congress and explains why this extraordinary action was taken,” he stated. “Step two will involve a resolution regarding war powers, which should have been discussed on the House floor.” He noted the pressing need to address the situation, emphasizing the responsibility of the Trump administration to justify its aggressive stance towards Iran.
As the White House faced inquiries about Jeffries’ justification request, a spokesperson highlighted that congressional leaders had received calls, and they had attempted to reach Jeffries prior to the strike, although they could not connect with him.
According to the spokesperson, “Democrats are misrepresenting the facts as they struggle to acknowledge the success of this operation and the U.S. military’s achievements under this president and others who have strived for the same goals.”
