Hamas assaults Israeli soldiers, Israel retaliates with airstrikes.

Israel conducts airstrikes in Gaza following claims that Hamas breached the ceasefire.

Escalation of Violence in Gaza Raises Concerns Over Ceasefire

The Israeli military launched multiple airstrikes in southern Gaza on Sunday, alleging that Hamas militants fired upon IDF soldiers. This surge in violence could jeopardize the ceasefire deal orchestrated by the U.S.

An Israeli military spokesperson accused Hamas of attacking soldiers in Rafah with an RPG and sniper fire, calling it “a blatant violation” of the ceasefire.

“Earlier today, terrorists fired an anti-tank missile and gunfire toward IDF troops operating to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in Rafah, following the ceasefire agreement,” the spokesperson informed.

“As a result, the IDF has initiated strikes in the area to neutralize the threat and eliminate tunnel shafts and military structures used for terrorist activities.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly discussed the situation with security personnel, directing the IDF to take “strong action” against any ceasefire violations.

In contrast, Hamas denied the occurrence of any attacks in Rafah.

“We reaffirm our full commitment to implement everything agreed upon, foremost of which is a ceasefire across all regions of Gaza,” announced the Ezzadine Al-Qassam Brigades.

“We have no knowledge of any clashes in Rafah, as those areas are under occupation control, and we have lost contact with our groups there since the war resumed in March.”

This incident follows a statement from the U.S. Department of State regarding reports of Hamas executing Palestinians accused of colluding with Israel.

“This planned attack against Palestinian civilians would constitute a serious violation of the ceasefire and would undermine the progress made through mediation efforts,” stated the Department. “The guarantors demand Hamas adhere to its obligations under the ceasefire.”

“The United States and other guarantors remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring civilian safety, maintaining calm, and promoting peace and prosperity for Gaza and the broader region,” the conclusion emphasized.

Hamas acknowledged an attack on a “hideout” of an Israeli-supported militia. Notably, Netanyahu had previously confirmed a covert operation to arm local groups aimed at countering Hamas.

Moreover, Israel announced that the Rafah border crossing would stay closed “until further notice.” Netanyahu’s office mentioned that the crossing’s reopening hinges on Hamas’s ability to return the remains of deceased hostages still in Gaza.

If the tenuous ceasefire endures, the next steps involve disarming Hamas and considering another round of Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
