Hamas dismisses US criticism following the failure of Gaza ceasefire talks

Hamas Responds to U.S. Criticism Following Ceasefire Collapse

Hamas has pushed back against criticism from top U.S. officials after a ceasefire with Israel failed earlier this week. In a statement, they contested former President Trump’s claims and the assessments made by mediators regarding Hamas’ stance and negotiation progress, particularly referencing Qatar and Egypt. Al-Rishq, a senior Hamas figure, described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government as obstructive, accusing Israeli officials of manipulating the situation and not honoring their commitments. He urged the U.S. to increase pressure on Israel to genuinely engage in efforts to end hostilities and negotiate prisoner exchanges.

Following Israel’s actions, which it claims are justified against Hamas, those involved in the ceasefire discussions in Qatar have withdrawn. The U.S. has been trying to mediate a resolution to the ongoing conflict, but so far, no viable solutions have emerged. The situation has become increasingly grim, especially after the U.S. announced it was pulling out from negotiations in Qatar. U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkov highlighted that Hamas’ conduct during talks suggested a reluctance to establish peace in Gaza. According to him, alternative strategies are being considered to secure the release of hostages and foster a more stable atmosphere for Gaza’s residents.

Witkov criticized Hamas for what he perceived as “selfish” actions, reiterating the U.S.’s commitment to achieving long-term peace in the region. On the same day the U.S. withdrew, Netanyahu’s office also indicated that the Israeli negotiation team would exit the discussions. President Trump expressed his frustration with Hamas’ approach to the negotiations, suggesting their lack of interest in reaching an agreement stemmed from awareness of the consequences following any hostage release. He reiterated that they seemed to prefer a more destructive path.

Despite the breakdown of talks representing a significant setback, mediators in Qatar and Egypt have confirmed their continued commitment to achieving a ceasefire. They emphasized that collaboration with the U.S. would remain a priority as they work toward a comprehensive agreement.

Although the failure of the negotiations is discouraging, new discussions are expected to resume next week, according to reports citing Egyptian news sources.
