Hamas frees final American hostage after 584 days — Trump explains the reason behind Hamas’s actions

Former President Donald Trump announced that Hamas has been freeing Americans taken hostage in the Gaza Strip since 2023, suggesting these actions aim to facilitate a ceasefire.

Edan Alexander, 21, who hails from New Jersey, has been identified as the last American hostage held by a terrorist organization. The remains of four other Americans are believed to be in the hands of these groups.

“This could hopefully be the first of several steps to conclude this brutal conflict,” he noted.

Trump expressed relief at Edan’s return, stating, “We are glad that he is back home with his family after being held since October 2023. Thanks to all who contributed to this significant moment.” It was during a casual card game on Sunday that he shared this news.

Hamas indicated that they are advocating for ceasefires to improve access to the Gaza Strip and allow for humanitarian aid to be delivered. Their criticisms of Israel touch on the suspension of aid as a tactic to pressure for more hostage releases.

“This move reflects genuine efforts by Qatar, Egypt, the US, and other mediators to bring an end to this horrific war and reunite all living hostages with their families,” Trump further commented.

The Israeli Defense Forces confirmed Alexander’s arrival at a facility where he underwent both physical and psychological checks before reuniting with his family. His captivity lasted a staggering 584 days.

Hamas officials mentioned to PBS their hope for concessions from the US in exchange for releasing hostages.

“The US and Israeli governments need to respond. We’ve given the Americans what they were aiming for,” a Hamas spokesperson remarked.

However, Israeli officials stated that no conditions were attached to Alexander’s release. Currently, about 58 hostages are still unaccounted for.

In closing, Trump reiterated his hope that “this may indeed be the first of the last steps necessary to conclude this painful conflict.”
