The Islamic extremist group Hamas has appointed local political leader Yahya Sinwar in the Gaza Strip as the group’s supreme leader.

Sinwar has served as Hamas’ political leader, mainly in the Gaza Strip, since 2017, but will now become leader of Hamas’ entire political wing.
Hamas members unanimously chose Sinwar to lead the Islamist movement, a senior Hamas official said. BBC.
This follows the death of Hamas’ last political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran, Iran, a week ago.
Shinwar said he was unaware of the group’s October 7Number The perpetrators of terror attacks against Israel are believed to be hiding out in Hamas’ underground network of tunnels far below the surface.
The Israeli military confirmed last week that a strike in early July also killed another senior Hamas official, Mohammed Deif.
Haniyeh led Hamas’s efforts to negotiate a ceasefire with the Jewish state.
Iran, meanwhile, is preparing to retaliate over Haniya’s assassination, which Israel has not officially acknowledged.
“Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin said Wednesday that the U.S. government, which has been mediating the talks with Qatar and Egypt, will ‘work to ease tensions and address the issues through diplomatic means.'” The New York Times report.
The United States has sent additional military assets to the region to help defend Israel against retaliatory attacks and to protect U.S. forces already deployed in the Middle East.
The appointment of the new leader came after a rocket attack on Al-Asad airbase in Iraq on Monday wounded seven U.S. soldiers, and Hezbollah has bombarded Israel with a flurry of drone and rocket attacks that have wounded two Israeli soldiers.
