Gaza Faces Potential Civil War Amid Rising Tensions
On Monday, Hamas announced it has recalled 7,000 security personnel to “clear out outlaws and collaborators from Gaza,” aiming to tackle armed militias from Israel. This development stirs concerns about a possible civil war in the already conflict-ridden region.
This statement came as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) began troop withdrawals, part of a historic peace agreement facilitated by President Trump and key advisors Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.
Experts fear that as the IDF draws down, violent clashes are likely to escalate among Palestinian factions vying for control after a two-year conflict with Israel. It’s a messy situation, I think, reflecting a desperate struggle for power.
“Gaza is flooded with weapons. Looters took thousands from Hamas during the war, and some groups even received supplies from Israel,” said a former Palestinian Authority security official.
“This sets the stage for civil war: an abundance of arms, rising discontent, and chaos, all amid a leadership trying to regain control over a weary populace.”
Hamas claimed it is “restoring order” following the ceasefire, and referred to a group called the Gaza City Family Gathering that supports its efforts to “reinforce order and protect civilian life and property.”
The group asserted, “Gaza will rise again,” reflecting an underlying resilience despite ongoing challenges from occupying forces.
The next step in the peace process involves Hamas disarming, a notion the group has so far rejected, calling for additional consultations before making any moves.
Rising Tensions and Violence in Gaza
According to a senior Israeli official, numerous Palestinians have been actively fighting against Hamas throughout the conflict. Rising tensions are also evident between Hamas and the Dagmus family, a powerful faction in Gaza that has longstanding rivalries with them.
Reports indicate that at least 27 individuals have lost their lives in intense street battles between Hamas fighters and insurgents near Jordan Hospital in Gaza City. It’s, well, a grim situation, really, making the future rather uncertain for many.
