Six Israeli hostages whose bodies were found Saturday in a Hamas tunnel beneath the Gaza Strip had been shot in the head within the previous 48 hours, according to autopsy reports on Sunday.
Breitbart News reported that the Israeli military identified the hostages as Carmel Gatto, Eden Yerushalmi, American-Israeli Hirsch Goldberg Pollin, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarsi, and Master Sergeant Ori Danino.
Hamas killed the hostages because they believed Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers were closing in. IDF spokesman Maj. Gen. Daniel Hagari said soldiers did not know the exact location of the hostages, but had rescued one nearby last week and were fighting on the ground at the site.
“Initial assessment is that they were brutally killed by Hamas terrorists shortly before our arrival,” Haghari said Sunday morning.
Ynetnews.com Reported:
Autopsies revealed that the bodies of all six hostages found and taken into custody in Gaza on Sunday had suffered gunshot wounds to the head and other parts of the body.
Autopsies revealed that they had been executed within 48 hours of being discovered, and that their bodies showed signs of neglect during their captivity.
No evidence of torture was found, except for one hostage who had been bound, but the condition of the bodies indicated systematic neglect, including a long period of poor hygiene, and signs of injuries sustained during the abduction that had not been treated over time.
Israeli Army Radio noted that this was not the first time during the war that Palestinian terrorists had killed Israeli hostages to prevent their rescue, notably in the infamous 1972 Munich Olympic massacre. Murdered The Israeli players were taken hostage as West German police attempted to rescue them.
Also on Sunday, three Israeli police officers were killed near a checkpoint in the West Bank in a drive-by shooting by Palestinian terrorists.
