"Happy to witness it": Super Bowl champion Bruce Arians criticizes the reckless NFL referees following two suspensions

NFL officials faced suspensions following two separate incidents involving players during games this past weekend. Bruce Arians, a former head coach who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory in 2021, expressed his surprise at the situation.

Arians understands that emotions can run high between referees and players on game days. Yet, the NFL’s new collective bargaining agreement with officials allows the league to take action when deemed necessary, regardless of whether it involves players or referees.

This weekend, line judge Jeff Seeman received a two-game suspension, and referee Adrian Hill was suspended for one game due to unprofessional conduct towards players. Seeman was caught in a heated exchange with Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride, where he reportedly used obscenities after McBride reacted to an uncalled play. Hill’s suspension stemmed from an incident where he was knocked down by Miami Dolphins running back Ollie Gordon, leading to a confrontation with Vikings linebacker Eric Willson.

JC Tretter, Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, voiced his concerns on social media, stating that such behavior from officials is unacceptable. He noted that players are frequently held accountable, and expects the same from officials.

Arians commented on these altercations in a recent interview, saying he was somewhat surprised since accountability for officials hasn’t been common in the past. He also mentioned his work promoting early prostate cancer screenings with Novartis.

Reflecting on his own experiences, Arians acknowledged his history of confrontations with referees, stating humorously, “They’d come over and say, ‘Please, just don’t spit on me, coach.’” He noted that it was unexpected to witness referees behaving unprofessionally toward players instead of coaches, who traditionally take on that role.

It appears the NFL’s decision to suspend these officials sends a clear message: unprofessional conduct will not be tolerated in the future. Arians believes this approach sets a necessary balance in the sport.
